Kometen C/2012 K5 (LINEAR)

Detta år ser ut att kunna bli ett bra år för att se och fotografera kometer. Året inleddes med ett besök av kometen C/2012 K5 (LINEAR) som har en omloppstid på drygt 22 år. Denna bild tog jag med hjälp av ett fjärrstyrt teleskop i Australien, den 12 januari. Då hade kometen redan varit som närmast och hade påbörjat sin utfärd igen. I den nedre bilden syns kometens omloppsbana och dess position då jag tog bilden.

I slutet av året hoppas vi på årets astronomiska höjdpunkt då kometen C/2012 S1 (ISON) kommer på besök. Just nu ligger kometen utanför Jupiters bana, men i slutet av året när den är som närmast oss, kommer den att förhoppningsvis att lysa lika klart som de ljusaste stjärnorna. Forskarna vet fortfarande inte hur den kommer att bete sig, men vi får hoppas på att den lever upp till de högt ställda förväntningarna.

This year looks to be a good year for observing and photographing comets. The year began with a visit of the comet C/2012 K5 (LINEAR), which has an orbital period of just over 22 years. This picture I took using a remote-controlled telescope in Australia on January 12. The comet had already been at its closest and had started their excursion again. The lower image shows the comet's orbit and its position when I took the picture.


By the end of the year, we will hopefully see this year's astronomical highlight when the comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) comes to visit. Right now the comet outside of Jupiter orbit, but at the end of the year it is at its closest to us, and hopefully it will shine as brightly as the brightest stars. Scientists still do not know how it will behave, but we hope that it lives up to the high expectations.
