Sunset With Sunspots

Yesterday I went out to shoot a sunset I've planed since last summer. This time of the year, the Sun passes right behind a big radar tower if you stand at the Swedish National Biathlon Arena in Östersund. The radar tower is located about 10 km away from the arena in a small village called Ås. I shoot the movie using my solar telescope to capture the structures on the Sun. The timing was perfect and the Sun looked really nice since it was full of sunspots and big filaments.

The Easter Solar Rabbit

The Eastern holidays are coming up and I thought that this photo would be a good representation for that holiday. It's a shot I took of the Sun on September 4 in 2013. While looking through the details in the images I found one section that had a prominence that has the shape of a rabbit leaping so I've named it The Easter Solar Rabbit.

For comparison, I've also included a scaled sized copy of planet "Egg" that has the same horizontal diameter as a scaled sized planet Earth would have had. Below you can also see a photo of the entire solar disc from that day.

Gårdagens sol / Yesterdays Sun

Ännu en bild från igår på en väldigt aktiv region med mycket intressanta detaljer på solens yta. Än en gång har jag lagt in ett skalenligt jordklot som jämförelse. De ljusa stråken kallas filament och är stora gas- och plasmamoln som kastas ut från solens yta. Dessa sträcker sig flera tusen kilometer upp från solens yta.

Another picture from yesterday of a very active region on the Sun with very interesting features on the solar surface. Once again, I've added a scale sized earth for comparison. The bright streaks are called filaments and large gas and plasma clouds ejected from the solar surface. This clouds extends several thousand kilometers up from the solar surface.

Grön blixt

Ikväll var det otroligt klart och fint väder så jag begav mig ut för att fotografera solnedgången. Det resulterade i ett antal bilder som uppvisade gröna och blå blixtar. Det är ett sällsynt optiskt fenomen som sker vid solnedgång eller soluppgång. Fenomenet kommer sig av att ljuset böjer sig då till exempel solen går ned  bakom horisonten. Det gröna och blå ljuset, som har högre frekvens, böjer sig mer än det röda och orangea, därför kan dessa så kallade blixtar uppstå även efter att solen helt gått ned under horisonten.

Tidsintervallet mellan första och sista bilden är 1 minut och 14 sekunder och första bilden är tagen 23:13:36 svensk sommartid. I övrigt uppvisade solskivan inga solfläckar, den större grupp som dominerat sista tiden låg för nära kanten för att synas.

Tonight it was incredibly clear and fine weather so I went out to photograph the sunset. This resulted in a number of pictures that showed both green flash and blue flash. The time interval between the first and last frames is 1 minute and 14 seconds.

Solfläck 1484

En ny dag med solfoto. Idag var solen betydligt lugnare än i lördags, men det fanns ändå en hel del intressant. Bland annat denna nya solfläck som är på väg att vända runt mot oss nu. Väldigt fin protuberans i närheten gjorde att jag valde denna komponering.

Another day with solar photography. Today the Sun was much calmer than last Saturday, but there was still a lot of interesting details to bee seen. This new sunspot was one of them.

Solen 2012-05-12

Solen så som den såg ut igår lördag strax efter lunch. Solfläck 1476 var en läcker syn med sin storlek, men det bestående minnet från gårdagen är de två gigantiska protuberansera som visade sig på var sin sida av solen. Helt fantastiska att titta på i teleskopet och de största jag sett under mina år som solobservatör. Jag har inte mätt höjden på dom så noggrant, men jag skulle uppskatta den till motsvarande 8-9 jordklot staplade på varandra. Det känns fantastiskt kul att solen är så aktiv nu och låt oss hoppas på en liknande show under Venuspassagen den 6 juni.

The Sun from yesterday. Sunspot 1476 was a beauty to watch, but the lasting memory of yesterday are the two giant prominences which appeared on both sides of the sun, the biggest ones I've seen during my years as a solar observer, perhaps as big as 8-9 globes on top of each other. It's fantastic that the Sun is so active now and let us hope for a similar show during Venus transit on June 6.

Sol och måne

I söndags medan världscuppremiären av skidskytte pågick som bäst, begav jag mig ut för att fotografera solen och månen. Solen har just nu väldigt många tydliga fläckar på sin skiva och detta syns tydligt på bilden nedan. Ute till höger i bild syns silhuetten av en lyktstolpe. Förhoppningsvis får vi se lite norrsken som härstammar från dessa.

Månen skulle lämpligt nog komma upp i närheten av skidskyttearenen så jag letade rätt på en plats som skulle ge mig en bra bildvinkel och satte mig för att invänta månen. Genom kameran passade jag på att titta på lite skidskyttar som åkte och hur publiken hejade fram sin favoriter.

This Sunday I went out to take photos of the Sun and the Moon. As you can see in the solar photo, there are a lot of sunspots at the moment. Hopefully some of these will bring us some northern lights soon.

This weekend it was the world cup premiere of Biathlon in Östersund. This day the moon should rise just behind the arena, so I went to a location where I could take a shot of the rising moon behind the cheering crowd at the biathlon stadium.
