Solar activity

Here's a couple of  photos of today's beautiful Sun. Lots of nice activities going on despite the fact that the Sun is heading for a activity minimum in the solar cycle. Including a closeup shot of today's big beautiful prominence.  Taken using a Lunt LS80THa telescope with a PointGrey Grasshopper 3 camera.

Sunspot AR2192

Today I finally got some clear skies and a chance to see the huge sunspot AR2192. It was a fantastic view through the solar telescope and I don't think I ever seen such a huge sunspot.

This is a shot I took today, in the center of the Sun you can see a very long filament. It's longer than the distance between Earth and Moon.

Behind the scenes of Solar Superstorms

Here are some behind the scenes footage of the work I'm doing on the upcoming Spitz Incorporated movie Solar Superstorms together with Thomas Lucas at Thomas Lucas Productions. The work is coming along just fine and I have some serious amounts of data to process. I will continue shooting during October so let's hope for some sunny days ahead. Read more about the movie.

Another solar halo

A couple of days ago another strong an beautiful solar halo was visible here over Östersund. I went to a large building called Arctura (Named after the star Arcturus) to capture this halo. Arctura is a hot water storage tank and it's 65 meters high, has a diameter of 27 meters and contains 26 000 000 liters of water. At the top of Arctura is a restaurant and during this day, their guests should have had a nice view over Östersund with this halo.

The Easter Solar Rabbit

The Eastern holidays are coming up and I thought that this photo would be a good representation for that holiday. It's a shot I took of the Sun on September 4 in 2013. While looking through the details in the images I found one section that had a prominence that has the shape of a rabbit leaping so I've named it The Easter Solar Rabbit.

For comparison, I've also included a scaled sized copy of planet "Egg" that has the same horizontal diameter as a scaled sized planet Earth would have had. Below you can also see a photo of the entire solar disc from that day.

Happy Easter!

Big sunspot AR1967

Today the Sun finally showed up after what feels like an eternity.

At the moment there is a very big sunspot on the Sun and it has recently been producing a lot of flares and is very active. The sunspot is named AR1967.

This is my first shot of the Sun since autumn 2013. The Sun doesn't get high enough this time of the year to get good and sharp images. At the time, the Sun was only 7° above the horizon, so usually I don't do solar photography this early in the year. But today I just had to get a shot of big sunspot AR1967 to see it's complexity. And what a view it was through my telescope, very impressive. Also there were some great prominences out on the limb.

I've included a scale sized Earth to better show the size of this big sunspot.

A new day dawns in Östersund

---

After several days with cloudy weather I really miss the Sun so I went through some photos from last week where I captured the Sun while it was rising behind Rådhuset here in Östersund. At the top of the Sun you can see a small greenish light, that's called a solar flare, that I've mentioned before. At the time for taking this photo, it was very windy and my eyes kept watering due to the cold winds so it was very difficult to see where the Sun was and that focus was in place. In this photo everything came together in a nice way and now it's much easier to look at without getting tears in my eyes.

Sun pillars

Finally we're getting some really cold winter here in Östersund. January and February is one of my favorite time of the year due to the fantastic warm sunlight here in the north during those two months. Today there was some very strong sun pillars over Storsjön. They are caused by ice crystals drifting in the air.

Big sunspot

Here's a shot from the sunrise this morning showing the great #sunspot that's currently visible on the Sun. I could clearly see the sunspot in the viewfinder of my camera. It's twice the size of Earths diameter and is one of the biggest spots for a long time.

Yesterday it produced a strong solar flare that produced a CME (Coronal mass ejection) that is almost certainly heading for Earth. So be on a lookout for #aurora the upcoming days.

---

Another picture from yesterday of a very active region on the Sun with very interesting features on the solar surface. Once again, I've added a scale sized earth for comparison. The bright streaks are called filaments and large gas and plasma clouds ejected from the solar surface. This clouds extends several thousand kilometers up from the solar surface.

Vacker protuberans / Beautiful prominence

---

Today there was a lot of fine detail in the sun, but the thing that stod out the most was this prominence that had released. Incredibly beautiful to see how it hung freely over the solar disk. I took the opportunity to take a close-up shot of this prominence and I've added a scaled size Earth so you can get an idea of how big these fire flames really are.

Stor protuberans

---

Whenever the Sun is visible I usually check if there's something interesting going on. This morning this big prominence was clearly visible in my small solar telescope, so I just had to go get my bigger scope to get a photo of this beauty. After taking this shot I sat for almost an hour and watched how it change. Really mind blowing to think how much energy that are in motion.

AR1748

---

Here's a closeup shot of the active sunspot AR1748 (it's the sunspot group to the left) I took today. It doesn't look like much but it been producing strong solar flares lately and as I'm writing this I can see how the earth is starting to be hit by the solar wind and the auroral oval is growing.

If we didn't have these bright summer nights we would probably see some auroras right now. As you can see I also added color to this image and as I mentioned in another post, this is my personal choice of color on the sun.

Up to the left you can see a scaled sized of the earth, just so you won't forget how small we are compared to our nearest star, the Sun. It's easy feel small and humble that we on this small rocky planet in cold black space, is totally dependent on this special star.

Dagens sol

Today was beautiful sunny day so I took the opportunity to catch the big sunspot that have been seen recently. This weekend I was down in Karlskrona at an star party (more on that in a later post) and we looked a lot at the sun with solar telescopes and especially sunspot 1732. The picture to the right shows an enlargement of the area around the large sunspot. Hopefully the sun will continue to keep a high level of activity during the summer, it will be interesting to follow its activity.

Stora protuberanser / Big prominences

---

Heres a photo from yesterday showing two big prominences (gas and plasma extending outward from the Suns surface) . The big prominence on the left has a height of more than ten earth diameters. Hopefully today I will be able to capture some closeups of the big sunspot that now dominates the Suns surface.

Årets första solbild / First solar photo of the year

---

My first solar photo this year taken in difficult conditions and with the sun only 20 degrees above the horizon. For solar photography it is better if the sun is high in the sky and not as low as it is now in the winter. I had some hard time getting this image since the clouds constantly passed by and I had to capture my sequences in the gaps that occurred.

The last picture shows a new group of sunspots that has just arrived. Unfortunately, none of these newcomers seems to be very active, so they'll probably won't produce any aurora. The long bright shapes around the sunspots are called filaments, it's huge gas and plasma clouds ejected from the solar surface. Some of these can also be seen on the sun's edge, then they are called prominences. In the picture you can also see how small the Earth is compared to the sun, however, is not the correct distance, the earth is much further away from the sun.

Also note that this is my version of the sun's color. In fact, the sun is completely white.

Now I'm looking forward to the motor focus I ordered for my solar telescope, it should arrive within a few weeks. It will give me a little better sharpness in the images. Later on this year I will also upgrade my camera to a more sensitive one. In other words, it may be a nice summer with an active solar to follow.

---

This Friday on the 21 December at 12:12 Swedish standard time, the winter solstice occurs. This is the time of year when the Earth's southern hemisphere is tilted most toward the sun and our days here in the north is the shortest. At the summer solstice it's the exact opposite, then it's the northern hemisphere that is tilted toward the sun, and our days are at their longest. At the winter solstice the sun is just over 3 degrees above the horizon here in Östersund, compared with the summer solstice when it is a full 50 degrees above the horizon. Below is a picture I took in 2010 at the beginning of January, showing the sun when it stood at its highest that day, about 4-5 degrees above the horizon.

Sommarens sol

---

The last few days bad weather made me miss the sun. I took a look through my archive from this summer and found some data that I haven't processed. This image is from August 27. This day the Sun was very beautiful with many fine structures on the surface and with a giant protuberance visible at the bottom left of the picture. I have also put in a scale size of the Earth to more clearly illustrate how big this protuberance was. When looking at this image, don't forget that you are actually looking at a real star. How cool isn't that!

Hopefully this image of the Sun will warm you a bit until we once again get to feel the sun's rays warm us up for real.

---

Earth, the moon and the distance between them, is to scale additions to better show how big this protuberance was.
