Yesterday I went out to shoot a sunset I've planed since last summer. This time of the year, the Sun passes right behind a big radar tower if you stand at the Swedish National Biathlon Arena in Östersund. The radar tower is located about 10 km away from the arena in a small village called Ås. I shoot the movie using my solar telescope to capture the structures on the Sun. The timing was perfect and the Sun looked really nice since it was full of sunspots and big filaments.

AR1748

Here's a closeup shot of the active sunspot AR1748 (it's the sunspot group to the left) I took today. It doesn't look like much but it been producing strong solar flares lately and as I'm writing this I can see how the earth is starting to be hit by the solar wind and the auroral oval is growing.
If we didn't have these bright summer nights we would probably see some auroras right now. As you can see I also added color to this image and as I mentioned in another post, this is my personal choice of color on the sun.
Up to the left you can see a scaled sized of the earth, just so you won't forget how small we are compared to our nearest star, the Sun. It's easy feel small and humble that we on this small rocky planet in cold black space, is totally dependent on this special star.

Here's a photo I took this morning when I defied my chest pains and went out in the backyard while the Sun was rising. The weather was very cold, -20 degrees Celsius and there was a light mist that made it possible to shoot right at the Sun without any filters. One can clearly see four big sunspots, and the biggest one was visible to the naked eye. Later I measured the largest sunspots diameter to about 34 000 km, to be compared to the Earth's diameter of about 12,000 km. In the foreground you can see the downpipes on my neighbors house. The Suns activity is picking up and hopefully we'll see some auroras in the coming days.

Two photos I took on October 1 showing two big sunspots currently dominating the surface of the Sun.

Now the summer is finally here. Today I wanted to take this opportunity to capture the beautiful summer and a bit of the life on our planet, made possible by our own star the Sun. What the bumblebee probably didn't know today, was that the sun was full of big sunspots.
