This Friday on the 21 December at 12:12 Swedish standard time, the winter solstice occurs. This is the time of year when the Earth's southern hemisphere is tilted most toward the sun and our days here in the north is the shortest. At the summer solstice it's the exact opposite, then it's the northern hemisphere that is tilted toward the sun, and our days are at their longest. At the winter solstice the sun is just over 3 degrees above the horizon here in Östersund, compared with the summer solstice when it is a full 50 degrees above the horizon. Below is a picture I took in 2010 at the beginning of January, showing the sun when it stood at its highest that day, about 4-5 degrees above the horizon.
