Today I'm featured as Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) at NASA with my photo of a lunar flyby.

The photo of a Gibbous Moon flyby was taken on the 29th of October in 2018 and was taken in the mountain area of Jämtland, Sweden

Just as I had set the camera for the correct exposure of the Moon and the mountain, this plane passed by. I quickly snapped a couple of shots and this is one of them. The photo was taken using my Nikon D850 with the Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens.

This is APOD number 17 for me and it's always such an honor to be featured by NASA.

Astronomy Picture Of the Day at NASA

Today I'm featured as Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) at NASA with my 360° panorama showing both sunset and Earth shadow in a remote mountain area of Jämtland, Sweden.

This panorama is made from 120 still photos taken at a height of 200 meters above the ground. The panorama is a 3 x 8 mosaic where each photo consists of 5 exposure bracketed shots to cover the big dynamic range of both the sunset and Earth shadow.

To the right you can see that the Sun has just set and a small sun pillar is visible just above the horizon giving away the Sun's position. To the left above the horizon is the dark blue Earth shadow with its belt of Venus above. In the middle of the sky the the First Quarter Moon is visible above the mountains, separating these two beautiful sky phenomenon.

The big peak to the right is Storsnasen, some 1400 meters above sea level.

Astronomy Picture Of the Day at NASA

Today I'm featured as Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) at NASA with my photo of the Moon and planet Jupiter with its four Galilean moons.

This night the Moon and Jupiter were only 1°45' apart in the sky, to visualize that distance, that's about the width of your thumb on a arm’s length.

At the time of the photo (19:33 UTC on 10th of April 2017) the Moon was 99,8% lit, so very close to full. This is a single exposure and to get a good exposure for the Galilean moons to be visible, I waited for some clouds to darken the bright moon while Jupiter and its moons was unobstructed. I used a focal length of 600 mm on a Nikon full frame DSLR.

This is the 15th time I'm featured as APOD at NASA.

Perseid, Aurora and NLC - Astronomy Picture Of the Day at NASA

Today I'm featured as Astronomy Picture Of the Day at NASA with my photo of a Perseid, Aurora and Noctilucent Clouds. It was taken during last year's Perseid meteor shower. That night was the first night of the season I saw the Northern Lights and it was also the last night I saw some Noctilucent clouds for that summer. This astrophotogrpaher hat trick will be hard for me to repeat but one can always hope for another chance for the upcoming Perseid shower that peaks tomorrow.

Aurora Arc - Astronomy Picture Of the Day at NASA

Today I'm featured as Astronomy Picture Of the Day at NASA with my photo Aurora Arc. It was taken on the 12th of April 2016 at 23:20 UTC just 2 km outside of down town Östersund. It's a panorama made from 6 photos (Two rows with 3 photos each) covering 180° of the sky.

Earlier that night me and a couple of friends had been out watching for the Aurora but the clouds blocked our view. Later at night when I was on my way home I stopped by this pier to take one last look and suddenly this really bright perfectly shaped arc emerged. It lasted for 5-10 minutes before fading away.

Earth to Moon solar filament

Here's a photo I took of the Sun today showing one huge filament stretching over the surface of the Sun. I've included a scale sized Earth and Moon and the distance between them and as you can see, the filament is just about the same length as the distance from Earth to the Moon. Otherwise the Sun was quite calm but this filament was very impressive through my solar telescope.

My Equinox Aurora - Astronomy Picture Of the Day at NASA

Today I'm featured as Astronomy Picture Of the Day at NASA with my photo Equinox Aurora. It was taken on September 24 and is a 360° panoramic view of the entire sky. You can see the Milky Way rise from the East and the aurora to the North. Outside of the all sky circle are reflections in the waters of lake Storsjön near Östersund, Sweden.

Aurora Cupcake - Astronomy Picture Of the Day at NASA

Today my photo Aurora Cupcake is featured as Astronomy Picture Of the Day at NASA.

It's a photo I took on the night of September 1 in 2014 during a quite strong aurora. It shows a double auroral oval over the city lights of Östersund and the village of Ås. While editing the photo I realized it looked like a green cupcake with a purple top. Our Milky Way Galaxy looks like some galaxy topping is being added to a already delicious cupcake.

Astronomy Picture Of the Day - A Strawberry Moon

Today I'm published as NASA:s Astronomy Picture Of the Day with a photo I took on May 14 this year. It was taken shortly after the full Moon has started rising above the horizon. Today, Friday 13th of June, it's time for another full Moon, so hopefully we'll see something similar tonight.

"A Strawberry Moon 

June's Full Moon (full phase on June 13, 0411 UT) is traditionally known as the Strawberry Moon or Rose Moon. Of course those names might also describe the appearance of this Full Moon, rising last month over the small Swedish village of Marieby. The Moon looks large in the image because the scene was captured with a long focal length lens from a place about 8 kilometers from the foreground houses. But just by eye a Full Moon rising, even on Friday the 13th, will appear to loom impossibly large near the horizon. That effect has long been recognized as the Moon Illusion. Unlike the magnification provided by a telescope or telephoto lens, the cause of the Moon illusion is still poorly understood and not explained by atmospheric optical effects, such as scattering and refraction, that produce the Moon's blushing color and ragged edge also seen in the photograph."

Yesterday me and some other astro colleagues got to enjoy listening to Robert Nemiroff from NASA's APOD - Astronomy Picture Of the Day. A very interesting lecture about their website and Robert also showed us some photos from the the last couple of years. Also a big thanks to Jesper Sollerman and Svenska Astronomiska Sällskapet for this lecture.

Min bild med den lille astrofotografen kom med i NASA:s kalender för 2013 där de samlat de bästa APOD-bilderna från det gångna året. Bilden är tagen natten mellan den 24 och 25 januari 2012. Jag och min kompis fick uppleva ett magiskt vackert norrsken som varade under flera timmar.

My picture with the little astrophotographer got selected in the NASA calendar for 2013 where they gathered the best APOD images from the past year. I took the photo on the night between 24 and 25 January 2012. Me and my friend got to experience a magical aurora that lasted for several hours.

Dagens bild hos NASA

Idag har NASA återigen valt en av mina bilder som dagens astronomiska bild. Bilden är tagen på Jamtli den 8 december i år och visar en hög solpelare vars höjd uppgick till ca 15 grader över horisonten. Fenomenet uppstår då solljuset reflekteras i de iskristaller som befinner sig i luften.

Today, NASA has once again chosen one of my photos as astronomical photo of the day (APOD). The photo was taken at Jamtli on December 8 this year and it shows a high solar pillar. The pillar height was about 15 degrees above the horizon. This phenomenon occurs when the sunlight is reflected by ice crystals in the air.

Idag fredagen den 20 januari har NASA valt min bild Vargmånen som dagens astronomiska bild. Det är min andra bild som valts ut av NASA, den första bilden valdes den 18 mars 2011 och den visar planeterna Jupiter och Merkurius strax efter solnedgång.
